| The
Emergence of NAND Flash
In the past, manufacturing was not required to program
NAND flash. Any boot code or Operating System (OS) code
was typically stored in NOR flash. Recently however
engineers have been using NAND devices in systems that
were traditionally NOR based.
Why NAND Flash?
As memory devices increase in size the cost also increases.
The price of NAND flash devices is currently about one-third
to one-fourth the cost of binary-NOR. Consequently design
engineers are making the effort to add the extra layer
of software (and sometime hardware) required to design
in NAND.
